Alpha - "An in-depth overview of the Christian faith"

Alpha is an ideal approach for people seeking to know more about Christanity. It is also a great experience for Christians at all stages of their spiritual development, and Alpha is spreading rapidly throughout the world. If you know people who are curious to learn about Christianity, invite them to Alpha. It could be the greatest blessing you could give them. See the photos from the Ottawa Alpha Conference 26,27 October, 2001.

The final GCUC Alpha course was scheduled as follows:
Introductory celebration supper: Mon Sep 17, 2001
Course begins: Mon Sep 24, 6:30 pm
Weekend: Fri / Sat Nov 2-3
    Ends Dec 3

This likely was the last course at GCUC, since in January the GCUC Alpha leaders began helping on the Kanata Community Alpha which began mid January 2002.

On 8 May 2004 we attended a memorial service for Mary Rae, who attended this course and helped on future Kanata Community Alphas. She went to be with the Lord 28 April 2004 at age 76. She is seated opposite me in red next to her daughter Maureen.

If you have taken the Alpha Course, and would like to help on future courses in any capacity, please call me! (591-3903, 24 hours). Prayerfully decide if this will be your ministry. God needs you! We have many good works to be done. I invite you to read my personal Alpha experience. You may also be intrigued by A Golfer's Reflection.

We held an in-home Beta course for Alpha graduates in March / April 2000 at 61 Highmont Court (home of Alpha leaders Laurie-Ann and Tony Copple). We used the Life Worth Living video material based on Philippians. Beta courses will be run by the Kanata Community Alpha team, to which GCUC members who have done Alpha would be very welcome.

Participants in Alpha are asked to please bring $5 to defray the cost of the meal. If you would like to register for a future Kanata Community Alpha, please leave a message with Registrar Lynn Williams at 592-5310, with names and phone number, or send an e-mail.

By December 1999, 33 people had taken Alpha at GCUC, of whom 13 are from the GCUC congregation. At least four other members of our congregation have taken Alpha in other venues. 12 members of GCUC have helped run our Alpha Courses. Photographic memories of the courses are accessible on this site. GCUC has proven an ideal venue for Alpha. We have plenty of room, a good quality TV /VCR, and our kitchen facilities are excellent, (particularly with the new dishwasher). We we will always be indebted to our brother in Christ, Greg Vaughn, of St. Paul's Anglican, for jointly leading our first two courses with Tony Copple, beginning in the fall of 1998, and we are still glowing from the pleasure of the music leadership on our fall '99 course provided by Jennifer Bulman, Henry Troup and Lorrie Nelson, of Christ Church, Ashton. As you see, there are no denominational barriers in Alpha.

If you would like to know what some of our previous participants thought about their Alpha experience, visit our Alpha comments page.

Alpha is fun. Alpha is uplifting. It is endorsed by churches worldwide, both Protestant and Catholic. It is non-denominational. And the food is excellent!

An Alpha mini-Conference was held on September 23 by Alpha Eastern Ontario, and GCUC was chosen as the venue. The focus was to train Alpha leaders in running the Alpha Holy Spirit weekend. See the link below for photos of this uplifting event.

In March 2001 the GCUC Alpha course contributed $60 towards Eurovangelism's appeal to subsidise the expenses of delegates from Easter Europe attending the Prague Alpha conference in May. As reported in the July Euronews 630 delegates attended (over 100 had to be turned away) and the conference was a spectacular success, possibly a watershed for Christianity in the former Soviet bloc. Churches and individuals in Canada provided sufficient funds for 200 delegates to attend.

In May 2000, Tony and Laurie-Ann Copple visited Holy Trinity Brompton, in London, the home of the Alpha course. See the pictures. Tony and Laurie-Ann were asked by Alpha Canada to become Alpha Advisors for Ottawa in April 2001.
